Best Cold Plunge Tubs: A Shortlist by Budget

The best cold plunge for most people is either a $1,150 to $2,700 insulated tub filled with ice, to test the habit, or a $4,000 to $7,000 tub with a chiller once you plunge most days. Most of the price above $2,000 is the chiller.

A tub is an insulated box of water. A chiller is a small refrigeration unit that keeps the water cold and filtered. Every model below is from the maker's own store, at the price listed on the day I checked. I have not used them. They are grouped by what the money buys.

Under $3,000: a tub you fill with ice

No chiller. You fill it with ice and change the water when it gets dirty. It is the cheapest way to find out whether you will keep plunging, and most of these can take a chiller later. The chiller vs ice guide works out how much ice a tub takes.

You sit upright in it rather than lying down, which keeps the footprint small. The R-16 insulation matters most here, because it decides how long the ice lasts.

$4,000 to $7,000: tub plus chiller

This is where most daily plungers end up. The tub stays at temperature, the water is filtered, and you plug it into a dedicated circuit. Check the power line on each one; they differ.

The cheapest tub-plus-chiller I found from a major brand, with a 1 HP chiller, bigger than some units that cost twice as much. Sun Home notes the 32°F figure depends on the room.

Above $8,000 you mostly pay for build quality, quiet operation and the brand. The cold itself is similar; 37°F is a common rated floor.

If you are new to cold plunging, buy a tub without a chiller and use ice for a while. If you keep it up, add a chiller or move to a $4,000 to $6,000 tub with one built in. I wouldn't start at $10,000. Comparing the two best-known brands? See Plunge vs Ice Barrel and the Ice Barrel review.
