Outdoor Sauna Buying Guide: Prices and Setup

A good first outdoor sauna is a 2 to 4 person barrel with a 6 kW electric heater, from $4,485 on the maker's store. Budget separately for a 240V circuit and a level base that drains.

An outdoor sauna is a small wooden building with a heater in it. The price depends on the shape, the heater (electric or wood) and what it sits on. Prices below are from each maker's own store on the day I checked.

Pick the shape

A barrel heats fastest and costs least. A cabin has flat walls and room to stand, and usually costs more. A cube has a big glass front and costs the most for its size. The barrel vs cabin vs cube guide goes through each one.

Watch what the price includes. Almost Heaven prices include a Harvia heater. Redwood Outdoors prices are the cabin only; a Harvia KIP 6 kW heater package from Redwood is $1,195 more.

Pick the heater

Most people buy electric. A 6 kW heater needs a 240V, 30-amp circuit with #10 wire; an 8 kW heater needs 40 amps and #8 wire. Wood-burning heaters need no circuit but do need a chimney and clearances. The sauna heater guide compares them, and the heater size calculator sizes one for your room.

Outdoor infrared

Outdoor infrared cabins exist, but they need 240V too, so they lose the plug-in advantage infrared has indoors. Compare one against a barrel with an electric heater before you buy.

Base and permits

  • Base: a concrete pad, pavers on compacted gravel, or a deck that can carry the weight. Wood on wet ground rots.
  • Permits: many places require one for a new 240V circuit. Ask your building department, and check HOA rules if you have one.
  • Winter: an outdoor sauna starts from outdoor temperature, so it takes longer to heat in cold weather. If you are between two heater sizes, take the bigger one.
I'd start with a 2 to 4 person barrel and a 6 kW electric heater. Get the electrician's quote before you order; it is the cost people most often miss. The cost guide adds up the rest, and the best home sauna list has more picks.
