What Size Sauna Do You Need? 2, 4 or 6 Person

For sauna size, buy one size up from the number of people in your household. The person count on a sauna is how many adults fit sitting upright, shoulder to shoulder, which works out to about 20 inches of bench each.

What the person count means

Makers count seats. Sun Home lists the benches in its 5-person Luminar as 59 by 20 inches and 44 by 20 inches. That is about 103 inches of bench, or roughly 20 inches per person, about the width of an airline seat.

A 2-person sauna works well for one person who wants to stretch out, and is tight for two. A 4-person sauna is comfortable for a couple and is the size where one person can lie down on a bench.

How price changes with size

Almost Heaven sells the same barrel in several lengths, which shows what each extra seat costs. Prices are the lowest configuration, with heater.

Going from 2 to 4 people added about $1,600 here (the Pinnacle was on sale; its regular price was $7,575). Going to 6 people also means a bigger heater: the Princeton ships with 8 kW instead of 6, which needs a 40-amp circuit instead of 30. That cost is not on the price tag. See the electrical guide.

Other costs of a bigger sauna

  • More air to heat means a longer warm-up, a bigger heater, or both.
  • More weight and a bigger footprint for the base.
  • A 6-person sauna takes as long to heat for one person as for six.

Redwood Outdoors' 6-person barrel listed at $5,299 for the cabin, less than some 2-person models elsewhere. The heater is sold separately, so add it before you compare.

For one or two people, I'd buy a 2 to 4 person barrel. For a family, or if you want to host, buy a 6-person and budget for the 8 kW heater and its circuit. Either way, run the room through the heater size calculator and check the bill with the running cost calculator.
