Barrel Sauna vs Cabin vs Cube: Buying an Outdoor Sauna

A barrel sauna is the cheapest outdoor sauna that gives real heat, from about $4,500 with a heater. A cabin costs more and lets you stand up inside; a cube costs the most and is mainly about looks.

Barrel

A barrel sauna is wooden staves held together with steel bands. The round shape has less air to heat than a box with the same bench length, and no corners where heat collects, which is why barrel listings tend to stress heat-up time.

The downsides are inside. The walls curve in overhead, so the upper bench sits lower than in a cabin, and the floor is a narrow strip unless you add a floor kit. Almost Heaven sells one for its barrels, starting around $459.

Cabin

A cabin sauna has flat walls and room to stand, usually with two bench levels. That is more air to heat, so cabins usually come with bigger heaters. They also look like a small building, which may matter to your HOA.

Cube

Cubes are cabins with large glass fronts and a modern look. Almost Heaven's 1 to 2 person Blackwater Mini-Cube starts at $8,397 with a 6 kW heater, nearly double its 2-person Salem barrel with the same heater. Glass also loses heat, which the heater size calculator accounts for.

Kits and assembly

Most outdoor saunas from these makers arrive as kits that you or a hired installer put together. Almost Heaven sells some as "Quick Ship Kits." Plan for two people and a weekend. The heater still needs an electrician; see the electrical guide.

What goes underneath

A sauna with people in it is heavy, and wood on wet ground rots. It needs a level surface that drains. The usual options:

  • A concrete pad: the most solid, and the most expensive if you don't already have one.
  • Pavers on compacted gravel: cheaper and drains well. This is the usual DIY choice for barrels.
  • An existing deck, if it can carry the load. Have someone who knows decks check it.
I'd buy a barrel for a first outdoor sauna. It is the least money for real heat, and a 2 to 4 person barrel with a 6 kW heater fits on a common 30-amp circuit. Buy a cabin if you want to stand up inside or the sauna will be a centerpiece. I'd only buy a cube if the design is the reason you want it. The cost guide adds up the full price, and the outdoor sauna guide covers setup.
