Sauna Kit vs DIY Sauna: What Each Costs and Takes
A sauna kit is the cheaper way to a finished sauna for most people: a 2-person barrel with a 6 kW heater costs $4,485 as a kit, and the same heater sells on its own for $1,254. A DIY sauna build saves money mainly when you already have the room, such as a basement corner, and only need to line it, add a bench and a door, and wire the heater.

Every traditional sauna has the same core whether it comes as a kit or not. There is a heater sized to the room and a 240V circuit to run it. The walls are insulated and lined, with benches inside and a door that closes tight. The vents go where the heater manual puts them. A kit sells you all of that pre-cut and matched. A DIY sauna build buys the parts one at a time. Prices below are from each maker's store on Oct 27, 2026.
What kits cost
| Kit | Price | Heater |
|---|---|---|
| Almost Heaven Salem 2-person barrel (outdoor) | $4,485 | 6 kW Harvia KIP included |
| Almost Heaven Hillsboro 2-person (indoor, spruce) | $5,299 | 6 kW Harvia included |
| Redwood Outdoors Alcove 2-person (indoor) | $4,299 | Bought separately |
| Redwood Outdoors Duo 2-person (outdoor) | $4,899 | Bought separately; KIP 6 kW package $1,195 |
Read the heater line before comparing. A Redwood Outdoors cabin plus its $1,195 heater package lands close to an Almost Heaven kit with the heater in the box.
What a DIY build still has to buy
- Heater: a Harvia KIP with dials is $1,214 (4.5 kW), $1,254 (6 kW) or $1,317 (8 kW) at Almost Heaven. Size it to the room with the heater size calculator.
- Circuit: 240V, 30-amp breaker and #10 wire for a 6 kW KIP, hard-wired by a licensed electrician (Redwood Outdoors' install notes). See sauna electrical requirements.
- Door: Redwood Outdoors sells a hemlock full-glass sauna door for $795.
- The room itself: insulation and a vapor barrier, plus boards for the walls and benches. These vary too much by region and wood to price here; the sauna wood guide covers species.
- Vents: placed per the heater manual, including the distance from the temperature sensor. See sauna ventilation.
Which to choose
If you are starting from an empty yard, a kit is usually the shorter road: the room comes matched to its benches and door, and the heater is often in the box. If you have an unfinished basement or a closet-sized room with walls already standing, building in place skips the part of a kit you are paying the most for. Either way the electrician is the same, and the heater manual sets the rules for clearances and vents.
Common questions
Is it cheaper to build your own sauna?
Sometimes. The fixed costs are the same either way: a heater ($1,195 to $1,317 for a 6 to 8 kW Harvia KIP, Oct 27, 2026) and an electrician for a 240V circuit. A kit adds the room for roughly $3,000 to $4,000 more (a $4,485 Almost Heaven Salem barrel includes a 6 kW KIP). A DIY build replaces that with lumber and a door you price locally. It wins mostly when the walls already exist.
How long does a sauna kit take to assemble?
Almost Heaven says its Hillsboro indoor sauna, which comes as prebuilt panels, goes together in a few short hours. Barrel kits are built stave by stave and take longer; plan on a helper either way. The electrical hookup is a separate job for a licensed electrician.
Do I need an electrician for a sauna kit?
For a traditional electric heater, yes. Redwood Outdoors' Harvia KIP packages say all electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician and the heater must be hard-wired to the panel: 240V, a 30-amp breaker and #10 copper wire for the 6 kW model.
What do I need to build a sauna from scratch?
Start with a heater sized to the room's volume and a 240V circuit for it. Then build the room itself with insulation and a vapor barrier behind the lining. Add a sauna door and vents placed the way the heater manual says. Redwood Outdoors sells a hemlock full-glass sauna door on its own for $795 (Oct 27, 2026).
